Everything I Do

I used to play piano at weddings - sometimes as a paid gig, and sometimes as favors for friends. I saw an old family friend tonight, who we will call Todd. When I saw him, I remembered one of the reasons I stopped being the wedding pianist.

Todd's family has been friends with Traci's family for many moons. Todd's parents moved to a nice place outside of FoGro (from Gilroy, CA) last fall, and Todd just made his first visit to beautiful Oregon.

When Todd got married ten or twelve years ago, I agreed to play piano at his wedding. The soloist, another friend of his that I didn't know, was planning to sing that horrible, fluffy song by Bryan Adams, Everything I Do I Do It For You. The chorus whines like this:

Ya know it's true
Everything I do
I do it for you

During the wedding rehearsal, this guy was attempting to sing it, and the song was out of his range (meaning that the notes were too high, and he sounded awful). So, I offered to play it in a lower key (meaning same song in lower notes, in his range - the sound would still be painful, but not quite as bad). Well, this offended the singer, and he insisted on attempting to screech the same high notes as Bryan Adams. So, I agreed, thinking that every wedding needs to have something to go wrong, so this might as well be it.

Tonight when I saw Todd, I thought he might apologize for making me play that song and listen to that guy strain his voice. He didn't apologize. But, I decided to forgive him. That's just the kind of person I am.

Don't worry Sam, I won't ask you to play at my wedding, unless Ben Folds cancels last minute... could you BE any cooler? I demand details: how many songs are in your arsenal? Did you ever sing yourself? Did you ever write anything?

Thanks for your interest, assassin - The arsenal of songage is rather large and embarrassing, due to the pink book of wedding and love songs that I think I still own. I sang once - a song I wrote for a friend. I've written a few other songs. I'd love to play at your wedding - thanks for asking.

That's pretty funny. By the way, I didn't know you could play the piano! You rock!

Sad.... A sad, sorry tale of a Key Snob and the pain he unnecessarily inflicted on dozens, perhaps hundreds of people. Thank you for trying to stop it, Sam. No one should be subjected to this pervasive form of auditory torture.
