Model Students (Not)

Tonight: Class 5 (of 7).

Topic: Parenting.

My role: Traci and I are students in the class.

Why? We have to go for the adoption.

Instructors: One is cool. The other is highly irritating. Tonight's instructor is the irritating one. Sigh. At least I can get some other work done during class.

The class: We had pretty low expectations.

Our previous class, seven years ago when we were adopting Kevin, was full of people who wanted to be foster parents, but didn't seem like they would do a good job. Some were trying to pay their bills. I remember one question, "So, if I put a child in a corner for two hours and make her touch her nose to the wall - is that good discipline?"

In this class, we've met a lot of good people with big hearts. They are concerned about kids and trying to improve kids' lives. One woman is in her 30's, single, and is adopting a teen-aged girl. Another woman is in her 70's and caring for her great-grandchildren. Another older couple have been foster parents for a long time and have a lot of wisdom to share. These people are restoring some of my faith in humanity - reminding me that there are some wonderful, giving people in the world.

If I let a child stay at the kitchen table instead of putting him in the corner, and I make him wear a clown nose and repeat "I'm a stupid idiot" for one hour instead of two - is that good discipline?

So this one time, I saw a woman lift her small child, spread his legs in his crotchless pants, and let him pee into a train station trash can two feet away from someone's head. Can she be a parent too?

Sam, were you and traci teaching the class? I mean isn't it a little late for you guys to be taking the, "How not to kill your children and go to jail" class? Good luck with that.
