Remember Yesterday?
One of Jules' favorite expressions is "Remember yesterday?" She uses it to let us know that she is going to share one of the following concepts -
1. Something that actually did happen yesterday, whether or not you (her listener) was present-
"Remember yesterday? I was at school and I colored and Stephanie started to cry because..."
2. Something that happened in the past, but not yesterday-
"Remember yesterday? When we were at Nana and Papa's and we saw their pond and I caught a fish and..."
(Note: We were at Nana and Papa's in July.)
3. Something that happened in the past where the story starts out with a fact, but then strays from the truth-
"Remember yesterday? I was outside in the grass, and the grass was spikey, and I heard a noise, and then I saw a dinosaur..."
I have learned that when I want her attention, I can use the same expression. And I sometimes use it while tacking on a request-
"Remember yesterday? (Jules will always stop what she's doing, be very interested, and say "what?") You did such a good job brushing your teeth before bed and then we read a book. Let's do that again - starting with brushing your teeth."
Such a parental thing to say...
Labels: being three years old must be pretty fun, turnabout is fair play, weather is cold and gross, winter needs to go away already this is April in Oregon

SAM!!!! Every time I remember that you're a dad to a 3-year-old girl, I like you a little more.
ALSO, it is destiny that you posted a blog at this instant, because I was just browsing your old entries... specifically, looking for the birth of Tammy. I'm still just as impressed with her vocabulary as I was in that first guest-entry. So nuanced....

Remember yesterday? When you used to write press releases about cool stuff that happened?
Me neither.

Remember yesterday when we used to sit and laugh at people slipping and falling down icy ramps?
So I tried your brilliant parenting technique today. Let me know if I did it right...
"Remember yesterday? (8 eyes look to me in total silence... wow)when you all got a beating for spilling popcorn on the couch? Watch out or it is going to happen again!" I think its working. You should write a book, seriously.
