It's Fun To Stay At The -
Today, during a quiet moment of reflection, I was reflectively reflecting on my moments in the spotlight - as a performer. The roles have been varied, challenging, and interesting. So here, for your viewing pleasure, is a sampling of Sam's performative highlights.
Dancing Rooster - As a summer job, I was Foghorn Leghorn at Six Flags Magic Mountain in the Happy Birthday Bugs show. That was the summer that Bugs Bunny turned 50. I'm sure you remember it well. We did five shows a day (30 minutes per show), six days a week. I wore a full-body furry rooster costume, which I would Lysol (I'm using it as a verb) at the end of each day. It was a very sweaty summer.
School Board Barbershop Quartet Member in "The Music Man" - While teaching in California, I was in the college production of this musical. I didn't have many lines, but sang some songs with three other guys (hence, quartet). We only performed the show three times, and in one of the shows I forgot to say one of my (few) lines, because I was not paying attention. After a short pause, someone else covered for me, and then I felt like a dork.
Piano Player - I got paid to play piano at a few weddings. I stopped because it was pretty boring.
YMCA Karaoke Quartet Member - Last summer, I had the privilege of singing (poorly) with three cool guys at a karaoke party. We performed YMCA (originally performed by The Village People - duh!) in full costume and with outstanding superstar-like dance moves. J-rod was the cop. Nate was the construction guy. Michael was the Indian (because he is Indian). I was the leather guy. The crowd loved us - or maybe they just loved the free beer. I like to think it was us.

All I can say is, let's leave the Village People in the past, as in the 70s, not the bus to Idaho...

I don't even want to know what you were doing up at 2:08 AM Mark. I as going to call you at about 12. But I thought, oh, he looked tired. He's probably asleep. HA.

sam i can't believe you were in a barbershop quartet! did you wear a plaid bowtie?

Good question, Ashley --
I can't remember the bowtie - but I do remember the red and white striped blazer and the make-up -- both were quite bright.

Sam:neither of your parents can sing. Your mom quilts and your father can golf some. Where did you acquire the musical skills?

Hi, Mike -
Nice to hear from the folks in da nort woodz of 'Sconsin hey.
Actually, Mom and Dad can both sing quite well. One of my favorite childhood memories involves the two of them singing a fabulous duet to "Tom Dooley."

Gee whiz, I have known them for 35 years and I do not ever remember either of them breaking into song.
10 inches of the wet heavy stuff. Got my wife a new shovel and some teflon so the snow slides better. What a man!

Awesome...I totally did that whenever I was in a play, too, about forgetting your lines!

Hey, Sam and Mike,
oh, sure, we are definitely singers!
And Dick plays a swift guitar.
We had mainly a two-song repertoire (yes, I checked and that word has 3 r's!)during the years of Sam's fondly remembered childhood:
Tom Dooley and
Streets of Laredo
Amazing that Sam developed a sense of humor, after being immersed in such sad songs - - no doubt we smiled a lot as we sang - - - and Streets of Laredo had a funny, surprise last verse.

My favorite was the part in caps...
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down you head and cry
(Mom) LET ME TELL YOU NOW!
Hang down your head and cry
Poor boy, you're bound to die
If that's not the foundation for a happy childhood, I don't know what is. (obviously...)

And now Sam you have been replaced. How's it feel to play second fiddle to a Border Collie with a southern red neck name. You're damn lucky your parents didn't name you Sam Bob.
